Economic and ecological conditions for cherry growing

The assortment and quality of cherries from our region is such that they are most often used in the developed Western European processing industries of juices and other fruit products, in order to improve the taste and aroma of these products, during the higher stages of processing. This indicates far wider possibilities for placing cherries.

Cherry production in Serbia has an outstanding perspective, especially in terms of exports.
Cherry fruits are mostly used for various types of processing, and the largest quantities are frozen or processed into juices. According to the amount of produced fruits, it is in the third place, behind plums and apples. Cloud cherry, which is mostly grown in our country, is easily propagated vegetatively, so the seedlings are cheap. In addition, it bears fruit early, gives birth regularly and abundantly, pruning is simple, a small number of protective sprays are required, and harvesting can be performed mechanized.

Cherries have a high nutritional value of the fruit, dietary and use-value. The vitamin and acid composition of this fruit is of special importance. It is used for processing into various products such as compote, sweets, juices and concentrates, pasteurized cherries, frozen cherries, cherry pulp, cherry brandy, cherry liqueur, fruit yogurt, flavored milk, candies and chocolates with cherries, etc.

Cherry is characterized by being very adaptable, it grows up to a thousand meters above sea level, but it is best suited to terrains from 400 to 800 meters.

Mountainous areas of Serbia, provide very favorable agro-ecological conditions for the successful cultivation of cherries with fruits of excellent quality and very high technological value.
The yield of cherries – is relatively modest, averaging 9.3 kilograms per tree.

Location and conditions of cherry growing

Sour cherries can be successfully grown in hilly and mountainous areas, as well as relatively higher altitudes. The yield is affected by the following factors:

  • Soil selection (light sandy loams, alluviums, and carbonate chernozems of moderate humidity),
  • Climatic conditions (cherry orchards should be on the southern or southeastern exposure, tolerates low temperatures down to -30o),
  • Selection of cherry position (gives best results on slightly sloping southern
    exposures),
  • Selection of assortment and planting material,
  • Application of agricultural techniques (tillage, fertilization, irrigation),
  • Disease and pest protection.
